Yakult is a nostalgic childhood drink for many Asian households. It is the world’s first probiotic shot drink, invented by Japanese microbiologist Minoru Shirota in 1935, decades before it became household knowledge that good bacteria could actually improve gut health. For over half a century, Yakult has come in a signature small, grooved bottle. Despite public calls for larger, one-liter doses, the company refused, citing potential health hazards and arguing that this might cost consumers to spend more money than necessary. The nurses who worked for Dr. Shirota were referred to as “Yakult Ladies,” which became a unique part of Yakult’s business model. Now, the company boasts over 80,000 uniformed Yakult Ladies who sell and deliver the drink across the world, and much of the brand’s successful marketing is owed to their appeal.
