Tehching “Sam” Hsieh (b. 1950, Nan-Chou, Taiwan) is one of the most notable performance artists of the 20th century. Fellow performance artist Marina Abramović referred to him as a “master.” A test of patience and endurance, his works often mark the passage of time through disciplining his own body in uncompromising ways. For Art/Life One Year Performance 1983-1984, Hsieh tied himself at the waist to the artist Linda Montano for one year without touching each other. In another performance in the same series, One Year Performance 1980–1981 (Time-Clock Piece), Hsieh punched a factory time clock every hour, on the hour, for one year. He recalls, “I was thinking about wasting time. Before I had a studio but I didn’t know what to create. I was just wasting time, thinking, for years. Then I turned wasting time into art.” Hsieh currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
